While Michael Phelps might have won more gold medals than some Asian countries, Asian athletes are performing well too. Asians have won 31 gold medals and 65 medals in total.

As of this morning, the Asian tally means that China gets gold with 18 medals, South Korea gets silver with 13 medals and Japan gets bronze with 9 medals. Interestingly, the three have all played host to the summer Olympics, with Beijing following the suit of Tokyo in 1964 and Seoul in 1988. Besides the three Asian powerhouses, North Korea has won 7 medals, India, Thailand and Vietnam 1. Badminton, table tennis and baseball, where Asians are expected to dominate are still under way.

These Olympics are also about pushing ones mettle to the most. Chinese women especially have broken several world records including weightlifting, shooting and swimming. Amongst many others, China’s Li Du broke the record in womens 10m rifle, Xiexia Chen broke the record in weightlifting womens 48kg, and Jiaying Pang broke the record in womens 200m freestyle.

This was also the first time in the history of modern Olympics that India won an individual gold medal in any sport. The last time India won a gold was 28 years ago in hockey, a game they didn’t even qualify for this year. Abhinav Bindra beat defending champion China’s Zhu Qinan to clinch India’s first gold.

South Korea who won 6 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze also broke records in mens and womens archery.

Thailand and Vietnam, Indonesia and North Korea have won medals too. While Thailand scored their 6th gold in Olympic history in womens 48-53kg weightlifting, Vietnam won their second silver in Olympic history in the weightlifting mens under 56kg. Indonesia has won two bronze medals here so far, both in men’s weightlifting, and Taiwan has been on the podium twice winning two bronze medals

Mongolia too collected its first medal of the Games when Gundegmaa Otryad took silver behind China’s Chen Ying in the 25m Pistol final.
